"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."
- The Lorax by Dr. Seuss

The children's book The Lorax was released in 1971. The small, furry Lorax is the title character. He "speaks for the trees" in the face of environmental destruction.

The Lorax was one of the author's favorite books. He once said, "The Lorax came out of me being angry. In The Lorax I was out to attack what I think are evil things and let the chips fall where they might."

This fable personifies environmental activism as the Lorax and corporate greed as the destructive Once-ler. The Once-ler starts a small business that grows and grows, cutting down the Truffula trees in the process. The Lorax repeatedly warns him of the harm he is doing the plants, animals, and land. In the end, he realizes his mistake and urges a young boy to plant a forest using the last Truffula seed in hopes of a better future.

In 1972, a short television cartoon of The Lorax was released, and a film version debuted in 2012. The Lorax also became a stage play in 2015.
