"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."
- The Lorax by Dr. Seuss
The children's book The Lorax was released in 1971. The small, furry Lorax is the title character. He "speaks for the trees" in the face of environmental destruction.
The Lorax was one of the author's favorite books. He once said, "The Lorax came out of me being angry. In The Lorax I was out to attack what I think are evil things and let the chips fall where they might."
This fable personifies environmental activism as the Lorax and corporate greed as the destructive Once-ler. The Once-ler starts a small business that grows and grows, cutting down the Truffula trees in the process. The Lorax repeatedly warns him of the harm he is doing the plants, animals, and land. In the end, he realizes his mistake and urges a young boy to plant a forest using the last Truffula seed in hopes of a better future.
In 1972, a short television cartoon of The Lorax was released, and a film version debuted in 2012. The Lorax also became a stage play in 2015.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing The Lorax by Dr. Seuss
1. Begin by drawing a rounded "M" shaped line. This forms the top of the Lorax's head.
2. Next, draw a wide, rounded "M" shaped line connecting the sides of the previous "M" and extending beyond it. Draw a series of short curved lines that form jagged points beneath each leg of the "M" Then, connect these with a curved, inverted "V" shaped line. This forms the Lorax's mustache. Texture the mustache with curved lines.
3. Use curved lines to draw the eyebrows, erasing as necessary. Use short, curved lines that meet at jagged points, giving the brows a hairy or furry appearance. Just above the mustache, enclose two rounded shapes to form the eyes. In each eye, enclose a series of successively smaller circles. Shade between the two smallest to form the pupils. Use curved lines to draw the nose, nostrils, and bottom of the mouth. Draw the top of the mouth using a jagged series of curved lines.
4. Use curved lines that meet at jagged points to draw one side of the furry torso. Then, use curved lines to enclose the arm and fingers. Note the bulges at the elbow and palm.
5. Continue the torso using a series of curved lines that meet at jagged points.
6. Draw a short line beneath the chin. Then, use long, curved lines to draw the arm. Note the overlap at the elbow. Enclose the hand and each of the fingers using curved lines. Then, continue the torso using a series of short lines that meet at jagged points.
7. Use curved lines of various lengths to give the torso a furry texture.
8. Draw the Lorax's leg. Extend a pair of curved lines beneath the body. Then, use additional lines to enclose the foot, a curved rectangular shape.
9. Draw the remaining leg and foot. Extend a pair of curved lines beneath the body, then enclose the rectangular foot.
